FOUR PAWS welcomes the election of the new European Commission

27.11.2024

BRUSSELS – FOUR PAWS welcomes the election of the new European Commission today, while emphasizing the burden that lies on their shoulders to deliver the much-needed animal welfare reforms.

Joe Moran, Director of FOUR PAWS’ European Policy Office, said: “We welcome the election of the new Commission and wait with bated breath for the new College to set out exactly when they will deliver on prior commitments to new animal welfare rules. Notably, as demonstrated from several EFSA studies, current measures, particularly in agricultural animal husbandry, remain wholly insufficient to safeguard even the most basic concept of animal welfare, let alone giving each animal the ability to have a life worth living.”

“We strongly encourage close alignment between the new Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi, and the new Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christoph Hansen, to implement the recommendations of the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture and develop a forward-thinking vision for agriculture and food systems.”

“FOUR PAWS looks forward to collaborating with the new Commission as they work to deliver new animal welfare standards that work for animals, farmers and citizens alike”, concludes Joe Moran.

FOUR PAWS is the global animal welfare organisation for animals under direct human influence, which reveals suffering, rescues animals in need and protects them.
