Intensive farming
Working to put an end to factory farming
Animals domesticated by humans and used for agricultural purposes are generally referred to as farm animals, livestock or production animals. In intensive farming, the animals are kept in conditions that maximize economic efficiency: in confined spaces, usually without any opportunity to move outdoors or exercise, and without being able to act out their natural behaviours or satisfy their basic needs. These animals very often show signs of stress. Every year, billions of farm animals in Europe and the world suffer on industrial farms.
FOUR PAWS is committed to improving the living conditions of these animals through continuous campaigning and sustainable educational work. We inform the public, talk to politicians and cooperate with the food trade and producing companies to solve problems caused by humans.
Our calls and actions:
Agricultural policy became a responsibility of the European Union with the signing of the Treaty of Rome. Regulations of central importance for agriculture, environmental protection and animal welfare were established at EU level. FOUR PAWS lobbies for the welfare of farm animals
- at the European Commission
- through participation in expert groups
- in the European Parliament
- at the permanent representations of the member states
- through cooperation with other non-governmental organisations
